What spinal problems do we treat?

Lumbar Disc Herniation

The disc is herniated when the disc material escapes into the area where the spinal nerves are located ( vertebral canal) . Microdiscectomy removes this disc material through a small incision using a microscope. The day after the procedure, the patient is discharged and is able to walk. For an even faster postoperative recovery, the hernia can be removed via endoscopy, which involves even less muscle trauma while achieving the same results.

Spinal Stenosis

Osteoarthritis causes a narrowing of the area through which the spinal nerves pass, preventing the patient from walking correctly. Microdecompression is the technique used to release trapped nerves through a small incision using a microscope. The day after the procedure, the patient is discharged and can walk more upright with less pain. If the spinal canal stenosis is located in different levels we recommend to use the uniportal endoscopy for muscular preservation and faster recovery.

Cervical Disc Herniation or Stenosis

If the disc herniation or canal stenosis is located in the cervical area, minimally invasive surgery also allows the issue to be addressed without damaging the posterior neck muscles. This is done through a highly aesthetic incision using the Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) technique.

Discopathy (Degenerative Disc Disease)

Disc osteoarthritis causes the patient to experience continuous episodes of back pain and sciatica. If the intervertebral disc is severely damaged and no longer functions properly, physical therapy or injections are sometimes insufficient. If the patient’s back problem prevents them from leading a normal life, spinal fusion surgery is indicated. Techniques such as PLIF, TLIF, or OLIF allow vertebrae to be joined and spinal segments to be stabilized through small incisions.

Spondylolisthesis

The presence of spondylolisthesis indicates that the spine is unstable at that specific point. If symptoms become continuous and do not respond to injections or physical therapy, stabilizing the area through vertebral fusion using minimally invasive techniques can be considered.

Vertebral Fracture

Following a vertebral fracture, MIS surgery can help the spine heal in the correct position without the need for a brace or a large scar in the middle of the back. By placing screws through small incisions (percutaneous fracture fixation), which are removed months after the surgery, the spine is able to regain normal mobility.
Vertebroplasty consists of injecting cement into broken vertebrae where pain and inflammation persist. The day after the procedure, the patient is discharged and is able to walk.

Spinal Metastases

If spinal pain is caused by a lesion derived from cancer (metastasis), MIS surgery allows for the relief of symptoms in oncology patients without the need for aggressive surgery. Techniques such as tumor radiofrequency, vertebroplasty, or percutaneous screw fixation (which do not interfere with radiotherapy) allow patients to lead a more comfortable life. If the spinal injury is severe and requires a three-dimensional solution, MIS surgery allows the anterior part of the spine to be addressed through a smaller incision than conventional thoracotomy or lumbotomy.

Facet Syndrome

Injections into different anatomical parts of the spine allow us to confirm the diagnosis while simultaneously beginning pain management. For pain derived from the facet joints, we use lumbar radiofrequency. Injections provide immediate pain relief and are performed without the need for hospital admission.

Consider less invasive options for your back surgery. Ask for a second opinion.

Testimonials

In 2017, I suffered a sudden loss of strength in my foot due to sciatica. The doctor indicated the problem was a herniated disc and advised surgery. During the check-up six weeks later, we saw the nerve had a chance of recovery. I asked if I could return to mountain running, to which she replied with a definitive ‘YES.’ I believed her 100% and started an exhaustive rehabilitation and training process. In 2019, I ran the Marató dels Dements—42 km with 3,900m of elevation gain. I am very grateful I went to her clinic because, after an injury like that, I likely would have been advised against competing again. Now, I can continue enjoying what I love.”

Sole is a 50-year-old woman with Down Syndrome. She is very athletic, loves swimming, and participated in the 1992 Paralympics. In 2020, she suffered a fall and a vertebral fracture that left her unable to walk due to pain. Following a minimally invasive fracture reconstruction surgery, Sole has been able to return to swimming.

“ I own you a big thank you for your surgery as a week after I was already back to proper functioning, a bit of pain but nothing that it’s not manageable 😊

Marko Majkic suffered a motorcycle accident at the Cheste circuit resulting in a vertebral fracture. A percutaneous fixation was performed through small incisions. Less than a week after surgery, he was able to fly back to Luxembourg. He returned to Valencia 9 months later to have the instrumentation removed. He was back on his motorcycle in less than 3 months.

When you have back surgery, many doubts arise because you hear so many things… having a perfect back is vital for quality of life. From the first visit with the doctor, I felt complete safety and confidence, and the surgical result has only confirmed it. Thank you, Sara, for your skill, your ‘good hands,’ and your close, accessible treatment. Three months ago, it seemed impossible to play padel again, and yet here I am…
