Microdiscectomy removes this disc material through a small incision using a microscope. The day after the procedure, the patient is discharged and is able to walk. If the intervertebral disc is severely damaged and no longer functions properly, physical therapy or injections are sometimes insufficient. If the patient’s back problem prevents them from leading a normal life, spinal fusion surgery is indicated.
